We cannot order your books or materials until we receive your payment.
It is necessary for you to pay in advance so we can have your materials available at the class.
First Responder is the highest non-professional first aid rating. It prepares the graduate to handle basic to advanced medical emergencies at home and in the field. It is used by troops to have an increased medical capability in their unit, give scouters the knowledge to teach the first aid merit badge, or have a family member be prepared to handle injuries and illnesses.
Participants sign up online. You pay your fees online, and receive your books and materials. You attend Saturdays and Sundays in March, read the book, do pre-work, complete quizzes, perform practical tests, and you walk away as a certified First Responder. You do not need any prior medical training to attend First Responder.
The course will held at the BSA training facility “Johnson Habitat”, in Denver (near I-25 and Alameda Ave.). Transportation to the class is your responsibility. There are no phones at the facility, but cell phones will be available if you need to make a call. A map to the Habitat is attached, or available for download at:
http://www.auroramedteam.org/maps/jhabitat.pdf.
There are adult level reading, assignments and homework. AMT recommends a minimum age for participants of 14. Younger participants are not recommended, but, if submitted, must be pre-approved by AMT after discussion with the parents.
The Aurora Medical Team, Explorer Post 525, offers this training annually as a service to the scouting community, their families, and the public. The cost for participants, BSA Scouts/Leaders, guests, and members of the public is $100, much less that available from public sources. There is an additional $30 in equipment (see next section) that we will purchase for you, or, your may obtain these yourselves.
If, after payment, you cannot attend the course a substitute may attend in your place. The registration and equipment fees are non-refundable due to the costs to purchase of materials and books. We cannot return the materials to the supplier once they are purchased.
Each participant must a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and pocket mask. AMT will purchase these items for you at a cost of $30. If you provide payment of $130 per person ($100+$30) AMT will automatically order your items. Please see the payment options, available online, at www.auroramedteam.org/firstresppp.htm.
Note: Multiple participants from the same household can share a BP cuff and stethoscope provided each participant has their own pocket mask.
You should bring your first responder book and all materials and handouts. You will need a pen. Wear comfortable clothes. If outside temperatures are cold the Habitat can be drafty, so a sweater or sweatshirt would be useful.
Most participants bring a sack lunch. This leaves you at the facility where you can study and interact with other students. If you want to fast food there are some in the area but not within walking distance. There is a fridge at the facility you can use.
You are expected to attend all of the class sessions. If you miss a session due to a family or personal emergency you will be expected to make up the class. You will have until the end of the course to make missed material, and it will be your responsibility to help arrange this with our instructor team. If you cannot attend a session please call 720-936-8599 and leave a message, or, notify the instructor at a prior class.
First Responder is presented by a variety of instructors. If there are questions concerning the overall course, attendance issues, and instructor issues you should contact the Course Director, Mr. Jay Hyland, 303-832-3290, jhyland@estreet.com.
Before every day of training you will have an assignment of pre-work. These are to be completed before each class day. These are not graded assignments, although it is expected you will complete these to help with preparation for the day’s lecture. They will be reviewed at the beginning of each day to insure you have the correct answers. They are an excellent source of review questions as you prepare for the daily quizzes and the final exam.
At the end of each day there will be a daily quiz. The passing score for a daily quiz is 80%. You are required to pass at least four of the six daily quizzes. If you do not achieve a passing score on a daily quiz, you are allowed one retest per test. The retest will be during the lunch break of the next training day. On the final day of training there will be a series of skill stations that will require practical application of first responder techniques. You must pass each skill station with a satisfactory performance. If you fail any station you may retest. Only two retests will be permitted and only one retest per station. On the final day of training there will be a comprehensive final exam. You must complete this test with a passing score of 80%. There are retest opportunities (this will be discussed on the first day).
Training will be conducted unless there is significant inclement weather. Unless you are contacted by the instructor always assume that training will proceed. If you have questions you can call 720-936-8599.
The Johnson Habitat is made available for this activity through the generosity and support of the Denver Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Please help us keep this facility clean and serviceable. Participants are asked to help us set tables/chairs out at the beginning of the day, fold tables/chairs at the end of the day, and help to pick up trash.
During the course you will be required to do physical activity such as CPR, lifting, carrying equipment, carrying patients, etc. Please come to class rested and focused. There is a lot of material to cover.
Aurora Medical Team will have at least two leaders present for the course. It is not necessary for individual scout units to provide adult supervision beyond drop off/pickup of minor scouts. A trip permit to attend the training is not necessary. A BSA health form is not necessary to attend the training.
There will be different instructors conducting the training from day to day. The emergency phone number is the cell phone of the presenter for that day. That information is available each morning. There is no permanent phone number for the Habitat.
To receive your First Responder certification you are asked to:
The instructors will work with individuals to achieve a passing grade. Participants who have issues with passing criteria will work with the Course Director (Lead Instructor). The Course Director has the final say in pass/fail matters.
You will be responsible for reading and comprehending the textbook. You will be sent your book upon payment of registration fees. It is an expectation that you come prepared to class with chapters read. Important: If you read the material ahead of time you will be able to ask questions that will promote your understanding of the subject.
