NEW CPR GUIDELINES RELEASED IN 2008 !!

Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It can be used by any bystander to treat adult victims of out-of-hospital witnessed sudden cardiac arrest.

Conventional CPR (CPR with breaths and compressions) should be provided for all infants and children, for adult victims who are found already unconscious and not breathing normally, and for any victims of drowning or collapse due to breathing problems.

If you are at the scene of an adult victim with sudden cardiac arrest, you should use the CPR technique that allows you to confidently deliver good-quality chest compressions with minimal interruption—either conventional CPR or Hands-Only CPR.

What is this program?

Explorer Post 525, the Aurora Medical Team, sponsors a regular series of First Aid/CPR classes to the community.  We have a one day program for standard first aid + adult/child CPR.  We also have a two day program of advanced first aid + CPR (can be used to fulfill the BSA requirement for Wilderness First Aid).  AMT provides this as a service to the scouting and exploring community.  Each March is the annual First Responder class.

For Scouters: Many scouting activities require that leaders have formal first aid training.  There are many groups that participate in high adventure activities that want a percentage of their staff and participants to be first aid certified.  Some BSA high adventure programs and Philmont scout ranch require at least the advanced level of certification.

How does it work?

Participants use our web to register online for classes, at www.auroramedteam.org/firstaid.htm .   Participants receive certification cards for standard, advanced, or first responder level first aid.  The class dates are found on the web, with training usually on weekends.
How much does it cost?

The cost for the one day certification (first aid and CPR) is $35.  The two day program, "Advanced/Wilderness First Aid" (exceeds the BSA requirements for ARC Wilderness First Aid + CPR) is $75.  First Responder is $100 plus equipment.  The fee is non-refundable.  However, if you miss the class you can reschedule to another day for a $10 reschedule fee.  Once registered, participants will receive payment instructions and directions to the location.  First aid books and training materials will be handed out at the beginning of class.
What kind of certification is this?
Training is conducted under the National Safety Council first aid program.  This is a high quality program using a combination of lecture, slides, videos, and practice.   It is officially recognized by BSA for medical training requirements.
Why do I pay in advance?
Materials are prepared for you in advance, so it is important that we know how many are coming.  Due to changes in the program no advance books need be sent.  You will receive all materials at the class.  It is important to have as many as possible register online to minimize the number of walk in participants, although we can accommodate a limited number of walk ins.
How do I register?

Registration is accomplished online.  You will need a mailing address so we can ship you materials.

1.  Obtain the name, mailing address, email (preferred) and/or a fax of each participant.

2.  Select the session you want from the dates of classes listed above.

3.  Enter the required information for each participant, and click SUBMIT.

4.  Send a check to "Aurora Medical Team", to the address shown at registration, or click here to Pay by Credit Card.

5.  No advance books need be sent.  You will receive all materials at the class.

Can scouts use these classes to support their First Aid merit badge?

Yes.  This training exceeds the minimum requirements of the first aid merit badge.  We have instructors that are registered as First Aid merit badge counselors.  AMT will sign the scout’s merit badge card for processing by their unit.
Who can attend?
This program is open to anyone: scouts, parents, leaders, family members, and guests.  All first aid is taught at the adult and teen level.  Parents and leaders are asked to insure that participants are ready for this level of training.  We recommend participants be at least twelve years old for standard level, 14 years old for advanced and first responder classes.
Does AMT teach first aid classes for troops and groups?

If you have at least twelve participants we can teach this first aid/CPR class at your unit.  If you are interested contact our First Aid Training Coordinator through this web site.  Participants will receive first aid books and certification cards.
Does AMT teach the BSA merit badge classes?

Yes. If you have at least ten scouts we can present a first aid merit badge class.  We recommend two to three sixty to ninety minute sessions. To arrange for this training please contact our First Aid Training Coordinator via email (firstaid@auroramedteam.org).  Note: the BSA merit badge presentation does not use first aid books or certification cards.  Scheduling is limited by presenter availability.

Is your unit preparing to teach your own first aid merit badge class?  AMT has prepared a set of slides to help you.  Powerpoint: www.auroramedteam.org/tng/fmb.ppt, or PDF at www.auroramedteam.org/tng/fmb.pdf.  Note: file sizes are large so high speed download is recommended.  Right click on link, and select "Save File As" to create a local copy.

What is the Aurora Medical Team?

The Aurora Medical Team is Explorer Post 525.  We prepare youth for medical careers and provide quality medical support to BSA and community events.  If you are interested in our program we are always looking for new youth and adult members.  See our web site at http://www.auroramedteam.org/.  Note for Boy Scouts interested in First Aid: There is a way to participate in some AMT medical activities without having to join as a member.  Scouts and leaders are eligible for the AMT Reserve Program.
